Expressive therapy helps children with life-limiting illnesses and their families express and cope with experiences, thoughts and emotions. Using various therapeutic activities including art, music, play, writing and storytelling, the expressive therapy program: • Determines the child’s emotional, social and psychological functioning • Uncovers feelings or conflicts that the child or sibling is having difficulty verbalizing • Provides an appropriate outlet for expressing feelings • Develops a supportive, trusting and therapeutic relationship • Uses imagery as an aid in healing • Assesses and explores death awareness • Assists the bereaved family work through the painful process of healing • Allows the patient and family to gain some relief from physical or emotional stress BJC Hospice is member of the BJC Home Care Services family and a service of BJC HealthCare. BabyZ lost her dog Katie and was sad. She asked her dad where would her dog go. DaddooX told her that Katie is going to a beautiful happy place, and suggested they draw it together. So they did. With lots of pretty crayons and smiles. And BabyZ was happy again, and felt better knowing her dog was somewhere colorful and fun. DaddooX taught her that when we’re sad we can visualize what we want in our hearts and where we want to be in our lives, and put ourselves back on the path to our happiness and our dreams.
