I am a fine art student interested in applying for the MA Art therapy course but confused about entry to cours?

I am in my third year of a fine art degree hoping to apply for an MA in Art therapy? However the entry requirements state that you should have experience working in mental health, special education etc? I was thinking about working for a year within one of these areas prior to applying but dont realy know what i am able to apply for considering I am a fine art stuent. Please help!

Mostly there is jobs such as Support worker or assisstant support worker
in organisations that care for those with mental health problems – or special education.

Some links that may help you see the types of jobs

http://www.carrgomm.org.uk/

Mostly you may have to do an NQ or SVQ in care but this is an on the job thing and is quite easy.

I used to work at a project for homeless/ with drink/drug issues we had a local artist come in 2 days a week and did pottery/painting/ and other art stuff.

You may find that some voluntary work may meet the entry criteria also

Many jobs in the care sector are part time or sessional so you may be able to get some experience whilst in your 4th year, or maybe not if there is a lot of work to do -

here is a link to a list of charities

some sites may have job descriptions and show current vacancies.

You will also need a CRB check or Disclosure

This is required by Law to check if applicants have a criminal record, but usually it is no hassle – the employer pays for this.

Entry level positions are everywhere in jobs that are assisting developmentally disabled adults or delinquent adolescents. Essentially, you hang out with at risk people or people that need extra help (take them shopping, watch movies, eat dinner, etc). Look for a youth home or a job assisting the disabled. That way, you don’t have to insert extra coursework for it to become an internship, and you can start working there now so you don’t have to take time off before you start your MA.
